A back-up plan with progressive staying mare House Of Lords was executed to perfection at Bendigo by the five-year-old.
The Peter Gelagotis-trained daughter of Almanzor produced a stirring finish from back in the field under jockey Ben Allen to score impressively over 2200 metres.
Now a five-time winner, House Of Lords had finished a previous eighth over 1800 metres on Anzac Day and relished the rise in distance.
“It was always the plan to back-up, we went to Flemington and saw what we wanted when she was strong late over shorter,” Gelagotis said.
“She’s a well-bred mare who’s bred to stay and I’ve always thought she’d be best over 2400 metres.”
Bred by Peter Gillespie and Bill Gleeson, House Of Lords was a trial winner at Foxton from Peter Didham’s Awapuni stable before crossing the Tasman.
She is a half-sister to Group winner and Group 1 placegetters Sinarahma and House Of Cartier with their dam the four-time top-flight winner Shez Sinsational.
