Trainers on mark with Almanzor 2YO

Stable confidence in Pounce was justified at Ellerslie where the filly produced an impressive return after a break.

Trainers Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott were bullish about the chances of the daughter of Almanzor over 1100 metres and she didn’t let them down.

Rider Jasmine Fawcett settled our homebred Pounce back in a small field before angling wide at the top of the straight and the youngster cut loose in the run home to win in style.

The patiently handled filly was making her second appearance following an unplaced run on debut on the course on Boxing Day.

“She was a bit keen on speed on a day when the winners were coming from the back, so we gave her a break after that,” Scott said.

“She had trialled well and her work had been really good, so we were confident she was going to run very well.”

A decision has yet to be made whether they now press on with the filly or keep their powder dry for the spring.

Pounce was purchased out of our 2025 draft at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale by Wexford Stables for $110,000 and is the first foal of the Darci Brahma mare Caminata.

A granddaughter of the G1 Railway Handicap winner Cannsea, Caminata has a yearling Embellish filly named Alta Via and produced a brother to Pounce last season before returning to Almanzor.
