Azarax struck another telling blow for our young shuttle stallion at Wyong where he made the perfect start to his career.
He now joins Hello Romeo and Stormland as Australian winners for the Group 1-winning son of Kodiac, while his domestic tally stands at five.
It includes our Listed Champagne Stakes winner Lucy In The Sky and Platinum Diamond, successful in the Listed Castletown Stakes, to ensure Hello Youmzain will be crowned champion New Zealand first season sire.
Azarax is trained by John O’Shea and Tom Charlton and had placed in his two most recent trials before producing a professional display over 1300 metres.
He jumped well to settle in the trail before rider Dylan Gibbons angled off the fence 700 metres from home to sit on the leader’ quarters.
They hit the front early in the run home and the gelding comfortably held all challengers at bay.
Bred by the late Sir Patrick Hogan and wife Justine, Azarax was sold for $190,000 to O’Shea, Laurel Oak Bloodstock and James Bester Bloodstock at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale where he was offered by Curraghmore.
He is out of the Tavistock mare Sunny Rose and a sister to the G1 Australian Derby winner Tavago with their dam a sibling to La Sizeranne, successful in the G2 Tatt’s Winter Stakes and twice placed at the elite level.
