Moschino does half-sister proud

Moschino handled a significant rise in class at Ellerslie with aplomb to score for the fourth time in her career and boost the prospects of her Karaka-bound half-sister.

Our homebred and sold daughter of Ten Sovereigns came off a previous Rating 65 victory to lead all the way and claim the thick end of the $100,000 purse in the Jo Giles Stakes over 1400 metres.

“It was a nice race to see how we measured up against some good horses and she’s done really well,” trainer Margaret Falconer said.

“She’s always been a nice galloper but has thrown a few races away by gawking around and nearly did it again.”

Moschino was well rated in front by visiting Australian apprentice Logan Bates in his first ride at Ellerslie and held on gamely, despite a late scare.

“She gave me a beautiful ride for the first half of the race, I didn’t think we would lead but nothing wanted to take me on. She’s got a big action and when she saw the post she darted out,” he said.

The mare is out of the Stravinsky mare Botanic, and we will offer her Sword Of State filly as Lot 325 during the Book 1 session of New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale.

Moschino was purchased via Gavelhouse for $2700 and is a half-sister to South African stakes winner Diamond King with their dam the Listed Winter Championship winner and G1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes runner-up Salsa.
