The cream rose to the top when our outstanding son of Snitzel proved the star attraction on the opening day of New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale.
We presented the high-class youngster as Lot 265 and, following a spirited bidding battle, he will be heading to Sydney after Chris Waller and Guy Mulcaster landed the final winning blow at $850,000.
He is out of the late Savabeel mare Amarelinha, a grand performer who won the G1 New Zealand Oaks on her way to claiming the NZB Filly of the Year title.
“I think that’s the equal highest result we’ve had at the farm since Sir Brendan and Jo have owned it so it’s pretty special,” Scott Calder said.
“There’s a tinge of sadness because we lost Amarelinha when that colt was at foot so he is the last foal out of her, but hopefully he can go on to give her a bit of a legacy.”
Mulcaster said first impressions of the colt left a lasting impression.
“This was a horse that we saw early, and he just stayed in my mind. We were lucky enough to take our client to see him and the colt behaved really well. Buying off Cambridge Stud, you can’t go wrong.”
Meanwhile, our son of multiple Group 1 winner and former Australian Horse of the Year Anamoe also made waves when he graced the Karaka ring.
Presented as Lot 102, he is out of the Savabeel mare Save The Date and was knocked down to Sydney businessman Mike Gregg’s Mulberry Racing for $650,000.
The dam was a four-time winner and Group placed and her mother More To Love is a half-sister to the Australian and European Group 1 winner and successful sire Starcraft, whose half-sister Forum Floozie was a stakes winner and runner-up in the G1 Coolmore Classic.
The family also received a notable update when Tuxedo claimed the Listed Aotearoa Classic at Ellerslie in style.
An outstanding international pedigree had buyers battling it out for a handsome grey Savabeel colt.
China’s Shijiazhuang Hongtao Horse Breeding had the last laugh at $550,000 for Lot 259, the first foal of the English-bred Sea The Moon mare Allemande.
Her family features an abundance of European stakes winners including Alyssa, Alea Iacta, Shine So Bright, Alla Speranza, Alea Iacta, Albaflora, Allonsy, Aleas and Aloe Vera.
A son of Proisir and the first live foal of a More Than Ready mare had widespread admirers and the subject of spirited bidding before the hammer fell at $350,000.
Purchased by South Africa’s Craig Ramsay, the colt was offered as Lot 161 and his Group placed dam Still Single is a half-sister to the Listed Dalrello Stakes winner Miss Hipstar.
Another decorated family member is Doubtful Jack, successful in the G3 Bobbie Lewis Handicap and twice at Listed level.
A well-related colt by Savabeel was another hot ticket item when he sold for $310,000 to Mornington trainer Matt Laurie and De Burgh Equine.
Lot 126 is a half-brother to the Kris Lees-trained multiple winner Stormland with their dam Sienna Rose a More Than Ready mare who won on five occasions up to 1400 metres.
The headline act on the pedigree page is Joliestar who has won seven races in our colours, including at Group 1 level in the Newmarket Handicap, Thousand Guineas and Kingsford Smith Cup.
Lot 33 boasted an international pedigree that has made its mark in this part of the world, and the good-looking youngster was successfully pursued by Te Akau’s David Ellis who had the final say at $280,000.
“He’s a really good-bodied colt with plenty of strength, and a classic example of the mating between Spirit of Boom and Pazienza,” Ellis said.
“We first saw this colt in December and since then he’s continued to develop and strength remarkably, which is a great sign for an early two-year-old type.
The son of Spirit Of Boom is out of the winning Written Tycoon mare Pazienza whose half-sister Folk Dress was twice successful and placed at Group 3 level.
The pedigree page features the G1 Underwood Stakes winner Buckaroo while his half-brother Middle Earth won the G3 Aston Park Stakes before placing at stakes level in Australia.
“We trained the mother for Cambridge Stud, a very fast filly, so have a good understanding of how good she was and she’s produced a top quality second foal,” Ellis said.
On the other side of the fence, we secured an attractive daughter of the dual Group 1 winner Jacquinot out of Beaufort Downs’ consignment for $150,000.
The filly is the first foal of the Kermadec mare Seduction Queen, who was successful on three occasions.
For the same price tag, we also secured a daughter of Savabeel out of Little Avondale Stud’s draft.
Lot 167 is out of the Rip Van Winkle mare Surveillance whose mother Sarwatch was a multiple Group winner and the third dam Riverina Charm won at Group 1 level in the Air NZ Stakes, Canterbury Guineas, Rosehill Guineas and One Thousand Guineas.
